How To Install A Dryer Heater

To test a dryer heater you will need an ohmmeter. It is very important that you unplug the dryer before attempting any repair. Once you have gained access to the dryer heater, remove the wires attached to the dryer element terminals. These will be heavy duty wires.

Using an ohmmeter, check for resistance across the two terminals. If the dryer heater is bad, you will be unable to read any resistance. Verify this by touching the two leads of the meter together.

When you touch the two leads coming from the meter together, the meter should read zero resistance. If the dryer heating element is good when you put the two leads across the dryer element terminals, you should read approximately 20 ohms on your ohmmeter.

Dryer heaters work by resisting the flow of electricity. This resistance to the flow of electrons creates friction and that generates heat.

The dryer blower and air flow system forces the hot air through the clothes and out the vent. All dryer heaters must have a resistance to the flow of electricity. A wire is also called a conductor has little or no resistance therefore it does not get hot.
